A Balanced Diet

Drawn here is a cross-section of the diversity of so-called "slime molds" that are utilized by beetles as sources of food.

Slime molds are enigmatic in many ways. Single spores are dispersed by the wind or beetles, and germinate into single-celled organisms that later coalesce into a large, "multinucleated" cell that may be as large as four feet in diameter. Some beetles specialize in feeding upon this slimy stage, while many more feed on the spores produced by the mature fruiting bodies.
